The first rule of being a doctor |a poem

red rose,rose,baby's breath flowers,bouquet with a rose,

The first rule of being a doctor.

The first rule
of being a doctor
is to do no harm,
but I’m not a doctor
and my operating
on you has
not gone well.

I did not mean for this poem to be funny. But when I tweeted this I got a couple of replies from people letting me know that they had laughed. I think they thought I intended it to be funny. I did not. I intended it to provoke feelings of dread and disappointment. This is why I have stopped trying to write short stories. I don’t always convey the right tone.
This poem was inspired by a #heartsoup prompt.

  1. Rather than giving up writing short stories, choose words that do convey your meaning more clearly. Maybe insert something in the middle to convey the level of damage inflicted? Suggestion:
“I never meant to injure (or destroy) you,
to cause the pain I did
    but I’m not a doctor
and my operating on (or slicing into / effort to remake?) you
    has not gone well.”

    • This piece was always meant to be a poem, but I’ve been trying to write short stories since high school and while people always tell me that they love my poetry they never like my short stories.
